Standard Indonesian Made Simple is a straightforward introductory Indonesian textbook. It relys very much on rote learning, with the exercises at the end of each chapter being fairly simple and repetitive, but has particularly clear and well laid out descriptions of the grammar. The last part of the book has a number of newspaper passages and magazine articles for reading practice. Working through Standard Indonesian Made Simple should give you a basic knowledge of core vocabulary and a good grounding in grammar. I enjoyed the experience, but this kind of approach isn't to everyone's taste.
