Gossip from the Forest is set around the signing of the armistice that
ended World War I. It presents a clear picture of the state of Germany
at the time, with government in disarray and a revolution brewing, as
well as vivid portraits of the main characters, in particular Marshal
Foch and German secretary of state Matthias Erzberger. The underlying
theme is the importance of individuals in history, but the result is
also a human story and an effective novel.
